The little man took a room in the tavern where he’d met with Roache’s man earlier in the day. The next morning there would be a meeting with the intimidating leader—not that he found the man frightening, but many did.

In reality, he could think of no one who truly intimidated him. He knew more about deceit, protection, scheming, and strategy than any man alive. Of course, it was helpful to have lived for twenty lifetimes already and traveled to all corners of the world gaining knowledge and riches.

His lust for the theft of beauty, though, always brought him back here, to the Twelve Realms. It was the only place where love could be stolen and transferred. He knew the land well and could travel with stealth wherever he needed to go.

This night he decided to sleep in comfort. If someone were to recognize him, they might share information about his activities. He did not foresee any trouble in this regard, since Prince Theiandar was far away. He had to assume their next stop would be High Castle. Negotiating a contract with Roache to kidnap the princess was imperative.

The sinister man lay on the bed, admiring the amulet, first stroking it against his cheek and then staring into its depths. The glow seemed to have diminished, even in this dark room, but he paid it no mind. He chose to assume his aging body was losing some of its sharpness.

He could have stolen the beauty at any time, when his last life hadn’t worn thin, but he knew this one would be perfect if he let it simmer, as he liked to call it. The princess! Ah, the princess. Yes, she is mine. Her life and body given to prolong mine forever. I will use her for my own ends, and it will be exquisite, he thought in the pit of his soul—the black hole that sucked the life from his victims and was never sated. His greed and desires were overwhelming, and he certainly enjoyed feeding them. Caityn’s life would satisfy him for a thousand years—much more than any other before. It was worth the wait, he assured himself.

With these twisted thoughts coursing through his head, the Beauty Thief fell asleep. He dreamed of burning the princess’s chest again and of flying in the sky, through the starry night. It was a pleasant dream until he was stabbed through the heart by the prince, at which point he woke with sweat on his brow. He stayed awake the rest of the night, anxiety crowding in on him. Morning could not come soon enough.
